As Caleb drove Meri across the fairgrounds to the old Women’s Building where the Youth Rodeo Association was holding the dance, he was whistling softly under his breath. Meri didn’t say it, but she found it charming. Even soothing.

The tune was something she’d heard in her continuing explorations of different kinds of roots music, but she couldn’t quite name it and she didn’t ask. It was a peaceful moment. They both needed that.

Oh, how was she ever going to do this? She wanted to touch him right now. There were four or five more hours coming up that she’d be looking at him, talking to him, even dancing with him. If she refused, it would start all kinds of rumors to add to the ones already circulating all over town.

That wouldn’t be good for the business, either. She had to do it for the sake of HGK and not because the thought of being in his arms filled her with longing.

He stopped whistling, turned to look at her with a sparkle in his eye, and said, “Ronnie Rae might drop by the dance. She’d love to get to know you better, she said, but she’s got a production sale at her Wyoming ranch pretty soon and she may go home to start working on that.”

Ronnie Rae. So that explained the twinkle in his eye. Meri’s teeth clenched.

Ridiculous, Mer. You’ve already decided it’s all over with Caleb.

But he should be told that he’d been wrong to involve Ronnie Rae at all. Dallas and Denton as winners and HGK as sponsor should’ve had all the attention for the team roping at the arena tonight. Ronnie Rae had been gracious in pushing her way into the spotlight, Meri had to admit, but she’d held on to the mike way too long, raving about her famous roping-horse sires of the Hardesty Ranches.

But Meri would not say that. Actually, if she and Caleb were no longer a couple, Ronnie Rae was none of her business. She wouldn’t make a big deal about her. But when they talked about how to be business partners only, she would casually mention the trophy presentation.

No matter. Her mouth opened and words pushed their way out.

“Caleb, even if we’re only business partners…” She bit her lip. She hadn’t meant to imply the personal relationship was more important. She tried again. “I would appreciate it if you’d keep me informed about arrangements you make.”

There. That was good. Maybe she wasn’t losing her mind after all.

He shot her a fast, slanting glance. “What’re you talkin’ about?”

“I had no idea your friend was cosponsoring the roping trophies with us. She just appeared out of the blue to help me do my job.”

He shrugged and shot her a quick glance, in which she thought she glimpsed amusement. “It’s no big deal. I saw her this afternoon, she offered to pay half on our sponsorship so she could get out there and mention her production sale, and I didn’t care. Why would I? It’s no big deal.
